What is eDP? Laptop Screen Connector Explained

eDP stands for Embedded DisplayPort. It is the standard interface used to connect laptop screens to the motherboard in virtually all modern laptops (post-2012).

Why eDP?

eDP replaced LVDS to support higher resolutions (up to 8K), higher refresh rates (360Hz+), and lower power consumption in thinner cables.

30 Pin vs 40 Pin eDP

  • 30-pin eDP — 2013–2019 era, budget/mid-range laptops, FHD 60Hz
  • 40-pin eDP — 2018–present, premium/gaming laptops, QHD/4K and 120Hz+

These are not interchangeable. Always match the pin count.

What About LVDS?

Laptops made before ~2012 may use LVDS connectors (two rows of pins). LVDS and eDP are not compatible. Signs of LVDS: pre-2012 laptop, runs Windows Vista/7 natively.

How to Check

  • Find the part number on the back of your screen and search it online
  • Look at the connector — single row of pins = eDP; two rows = LVDS
