How to Fix Laptop Screen Lines — Vertical and Horizontal Lines

Lines appearing on a laptop screen — whether vertical, horizontal, or a combination of both — are one of the most common display faults. This guide explains what causes them and how to fix them.

Types of Screen Lines

  • Vertical lines — single or multiple lines running top to bottom
  • Horizontal lines — lines running left to right across the screen
  • Coloured lines — lines in red, green, blue or white
  • Flickering lines — lines that appear and disappear
  • Static lines — permanent lines that don't move

Step 1 — Check if it's a Software or Hardware Issue

The quickest way to determine the cause is to check whether the lines appear on an external monitor.

  1. Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV via HDMI or DisplayPort
  2. If the lines appear on the external display too — the fault is with the GPU or graphics driver (software/hardware)
  3. If the external display is fine — the fault is with the laptop screen itself (panel or cable)

Step 2 — Update or Reinstall Display Drivers

If lines appear on both displays, a driver issue may be the cause.

  1. Open Device Manager (right-click Start button)
  2. Expand Display Adapters
  3. Right-click your graphics adapter and select Update Driver
  4. If updating doesn't help, uninstall the driver and restart Windows to reinstall automatically
  5. You can also download the latest driver directly from Intel, AMD or Nvidia's website

Step 3 — Check the Video Cable

If the external display is fine but your laptop screen has lines, the video cable connecting the screen to the motherboard is a likely culprit.

  1. Power off the laptop and unplug it
  2. Remove the screen bezel and tilt the panel forward
  3. Check the video cable connection at the back of the screen — unplug and firmly reseat it
  4. Check for any visible damage, kinks or pinching along the cable length
  5. If the cable is damaged, it will need replacing

Tip: If the lines change or disappear when you flex the lid slightly, a damaged cable is almost certainly the cause.

Step 4 — Check the Screen Connection at the Motherboard End

The cable also connects to the motherboard via a small connector. This connection can loosen over time.

  1. Access the motherboard end of the display cable (usually requires removing the bottom panel)
  2. Carefully unplug and reseat the connector
  3. Test before reassembling

Step 5 — Replace the Screen Panel

If the cable and connections are secure but lines persist, the LCD panel itself has likely developed a fault. This is common after physical impact, pressure on the screen, or simply age.

Signs that the panel needs replacing:

  • Lines are present from the moment the laptop boots
  • Lines appear even on the BIOS/startup screen
  • Part of the screen shows a correct image while the rest has lines
  • You can see physical damage or pressure marks on the screen

Can Lines Be Caused by Physical Damage?

Yes. If your laptop has been dropped, had something heavy placed on it, or has been squeezed in a bag, the pressure can cause the LCD matrix to crack internally. This often appears as coloured vertical lines or a spreading discolouration. In this case, the screen panel needs replacing.

How Much Does it Cost to Fix Laptop Screen Lines?

If the fix is a driver update, it costs nothing. If a new screen panel is needed, replacement screens typically cost between £20 and £100 depending on the laptop model — a fraction of the cost of a new laptop.
